Looking Closer, and Knowing More About Your Cannabis

As the Industry matures, cultivators and teams will always look for ways to improve and refine their techniques. Incorporating new tools and technology is a crucial part of refining the craft of cannabis. New tools can solve a problem or rough spot in a work flow, improve the efficiency and insight of an already skilled grower, and unlock new data points that improve the quality of the cannabis produced by a garden.

The Delta9 team do our best to stay looking forward, and to seek out tech that cannabis cultivators can use to improve their craft while gaining competitive advantage. In July we added two pieces of technology that give indoor and outdoor growers and processors new capabilities to inspect and measure their flowers and concentrates.

The first is a tool to allow cultivators to see their product from an entirely new vantage point. We are very excited to now be carrying the Dino-Lite Microscope Series. These handheld digital microscopes connect to your garden or processing terminal with a standard USB and are designed to provide fast and easy illumination and magnification of everything in the garden.

These devices will give your team new eyes with a whole new perspective on the plant and its health as it develops, which can offer practical and artistic advantages. Forward thinking cultivators should replace those cheap handheld battery scopes with these high-powered magnification devices to achieve a Cannabis 2.0 Quality Assurance process.

Knowing precisely what is happening on a macro scale in your soil, in the rez, and on your leaves can be a next level step in IPM regimens and quality control. These scopes make it much easier to identify infection and potential problems while they are small, before they become a big problem.

Some of the most damaging pests are invisible to the naked eye or can be easily mistaken for other pests. Correctly identifying an invasive pest as soon as it is detectable is crucial to choosing the right treatment and knocking out the infestation. Even a minor infection can reduce yield and quality drastically if it’s mis-identified. The longer an infestation or infection persists the more likely it is to affect other systems like HVAC or worse, spread to other parts of the facility

Adding these scopes to the toolbox also allow your staff to monitor and even photograph trichome heads in incredible detail. Track the ripeness of the crop and schedule harvest operations at the exact time the heads become ripe with peak cannabinoid potency, as they transition from milky to hints of amber. Capturing this type of imagery is also incredibly valuable for a brand and can drive highly individualized content creation.

The next item Delta9 now offers the Industry is the Purpl PRO Portable Potency Test. Purpl PRO is produced by D9S partners Purpl Scientific. It is the first affordable, accurate, portable potency measurement device for the cannabis industry. The Purpl PRO is a combination of a “laboratory bench” device the size of a Post-It stack and a mobile App that allows users to run the system through a smartphone.

This handheld device uses near-infrared spectroscopy, which involves the sample to infra-red light waves and analyzing the light that is refracted and reflected back. In this part of the light spectrum (just beyond the red light human eyes can see) molecules react to specific regions of the light to generate a “molecular fingerprint” that can be correlated with concentration. The Purpl PRO was calibrated against HPLC measurements from multiple state-certified testing laboratories. This technology was originally developed for agricultural measurements 70 years ago and has since been integrated into all kinds of different manufacturing and pharmaceutical QA systems.

The Purpl PRO has been refined and tuned specifically for cannabinoids and is already changing the cannabis industry.  The Purpl Pro is crazy accurate Overall, Purpl states a +/- 2% accuracy on THC and CBD for simplicity. Statistically, it is +/- 1.89% on THC and +/- 0.96% on CBD, determined by comparison with lab HPLC measurements. The test cycle takes less than 2 minutes, allowing up to 30 tests an hour!

This tool will not take the place of a verified third-party lab CoA for the official testing results required by law, but for any instance where an official test is not required the Purpl PRO will save users time and money.

The value to breeders who are quantifying the characteristics of new genetics is immense. Cultivators who have purchased seeds and are hunting for the right phenotype to add to their production schedules will save money on every R&D potency test.

Cultivators can use the Purpl to refine their growing techniques, identify micro-climates in rooms, and measure the real effects of new equipment in side-by-side trials.
