Like any plant, cannabis is vulnerable to pests, fungi, viruses and bacteria. These contaminants can result in significant production loss and pose hazards to end-users. In particular, the presence of mold and mildew can be highly dangerous for medical cannabis patients with compromised immune systems.

Thankfully, many plant diseases and contaminants are manageable if you know what to look for and how to keep it from spreading to the rest of your crop. The best treatment is prevention, and that starts with creating a clean, organized and efficient cultivation environment!

Here are three ways to optimize your grow operation and keep your cannabis harvest as healthy as possible:

Monitor closely

When it comes to cannabis plant diseases, early detection is key. As a grower, it’s important to keep a close eye on your plants so you can spot, identify and treat any issues as soon as possible.

Plant viruses and pathogens are often transmitted through cannabis pests such as aphids, spider mites, whiteflies and thrips. Of course, effective pest control means being able to detect these small insects, many of which can be difficult (or even impossible) to see with the naked eye.

Handheld microscopes, like the Dino-Lite digital microscope camera, enable cannabis growers to proactively check plants for signs of pests, mold impurities and other imperfections. Dino-Lite offers a 10x to 250x magnification capability, helping cultivators protect the health of their crop and stay in compliance with local regulations. This versatile tool also has a built-in camera with LED control so you can capture stunning macro images of your product throughout the grow cycle.

Maintain a clean, tidy grow space

If you detect a viral or fungal infection in one of your plants, the last thing you want is for it to spread to the rest of your harvest. Minimize the possibility of cross-contamination between plants by keeping your grow area as hygienic and organized as possible. This means sterilizing scissors or trimmers, plant containers and trays, workstations and other equipment, and having employees sterilize their hands or change gloves between plant touches.

To save time and prevent the risk of plant disease transmission, consider switching from reusable plastic containers to disposable cannabis pots. At Delta9 Systems, our new disposable cannabis pots are made from black and white Panda Plastic for easy, quick clean-up. Available in several sizes, these disposable cannabis pots come with pre-cut drainage holes to give roots plenty of room to grow without getting waterlogged.

Grower’s film is another smart solution to keep your grow room tidy and limit the spread of pathogens. Our waterproof black and white film is commonly used to line grow room walls, floors and ceilings to reflect light onto cannabis plants. This versatile cannabis grower’s film can also act as a heavy-duty tarp to protect your floors and walls during propagation and harvest operations. Being able to contain and quickly remove dead plant material and spilled soil will keep your grow room clean while preventing the growth of mold and other potential problems.

Control and track employee contact

Anyone who enters your cannabis facility can track in pests, plant diseases and bacteria on their shoes, clothes or hair. It’s not uncommon for cultivators to require employees to shower before entering the facility, dress in scrubs and wear hairnets and shoe coverings to maintain a safe, sterile grow environment.

Along with these preventative measures, it’s important to prevent cross-contamination from room-to-room. Make the most of the data you’re already collecting for state traceability programs to keep track of your team’s movement throughout the facility and manage a smooth, efficient workflow. When you know exactly which employees were in contact with specific plants, it’s much easier to trace the origin of a disease outbreak and prevent it from spreading to the entire crop.

Put these traceability tasks at your fingertips with durable mobile computers or tablets. Our high-quality garden terminals will ensure your garden is always connected to the tools and data gathering systems needed to be successful.
